Legends

In the above schematic, the keys whose legends in traditional Italian keyboard match perfectly with Updated Italian Keyboard mapping have been left blank. Keys in which there's not perfect compatibility have grey characters where they match, and black characters where they differ. Move the mouse over the image and outside the image in order to look at the differences.

Given that the above picture shows proper legends of an Updated Italian Keyboard, later in this page are explained its divergences from the legends of a traditional Italian keyboard.

Note that in the Updated Italian Keyboard the uppercase accented vowels are typed as simply as any other uppercase character, by just adding the Shift modifier to the lowercase character. For this purpose, some characters have been moved with respect to the traditional Italian keyboard. They are:

• e acute ( é ) has been moved from 2^nd position of the è key, to 1^st position of the < (less than) key
• less than and greater than ( < > ) have been moved to 3^rd position of the z and x keys
• degree ( ° ) has been moved from 2^nd position of the à key to 4^th position of the ò key
• circumflex ( ^ ) has been moved from 2^nd to 3^rd position of the ì key
• c with cedilla ( ç ) has been removed from the ò key, and relocated to the layer of cedilla
• paragraph symbol ( § ) has been moved from 2^nd to 3^rd position of the ù key
• Euro symbol, which the traditional Italian keyboard maps both in 3^rd position of the e key and in 3^rd position of the 5 key, in the Updated Italian Keyboard is only located in 3^rd position of the key 5

The above points describe all the discrepancies between the legends of the traditional keyboard and the character map of the Updated Italian Keyboard. Notice that, apart from the é, they affect characters rarely used.
